Employee Value Proposition
Lonmin’s mining model is labour-intensive, and we appreciate that our human capital is the most important relationship in order to realise value from our infrastructure and mineral reserves. We can only achieve our strategic goals by attracting, developing and retaining the necessary skills required to sustain operational excellence.
Lonmin has focused projects such as the Employee Value Proposition (EVP) that aims to improve relationships and build trust for those working for Lonmin. The EVP includes a broad set of programmes and initiatives that outline the total package a full-time employee can expect to receive from the Company in terms of remuneration, benefits, development and advancement opportunities.
One of the Company’s primary EVP initiatives, ‘The Way We Work at Lonmin’, is a leader-led change journey that aims to develop and institutionalise a Lonmin culture that supports sustained success, by establishing productive behaviour and mind-sets that are built around work-team relationships. This initiative aims to improve communication, entrench accountability and empower and resource teams to do what is required of them.
Learning and Development
Our people development initiatives aim to develop the required skills in our employees to create an empowered and productive workforce, and to develop industry skills to increase the pool of local employees from the Greater Lonmin Community.
Community skills development programmes include the production cadet, the mining technical service and community (18.2) engineering learnership programmes. Scarce technical skills in mining, processing and engineering are developed through learnerships in our Mining and Process Operations, and Engineering Function, while the core skills programme addresses the critical competencies required to meet key operational standards.
We believe that much of our learning takes place in the workplace. Employees are encouraged to join the structured workplace coaching programme where individual coaching is conducted to bridge individual competency gaps. Furthermore employees are also encouraged to enrol in our Individual Development Plan programme where personal goals for their current and future development are translated into an achievable action plan that is continuously tracked. A formal mentorship programme furthermore facilitates skills transfer and knowledge sharing. Together, these programmes support the execution of the Lonmin talent management strategy.
Rewards and Benefits
To attract and retain the best people, we offer competitive reward packages and a range of benefits. It doesn’t end there – the greatest aspect of working at Lonmin is the opportunity we offer our people to learn, grow and contribute.
When you join Lonmin, you will be eligible for a reward and benefits package that is very competitive in the local employment market. You will be part of a team that will support your progress and encourage you to think in new ways. In turn, you will help the people around you discover their talents and abilities.
Our benefits include on-site healthcare, life and disability insurance (which includes an education protection plan and retirement provisions), study leave, four months’ paid maternity leave and thirty five annual leave days per annum. Employees also have access to a range of non-financial benefits, such as financial debt counselling and an employee wellness service that provides free, confidential professional counsellors and therapists to employees and their dependents on matters of emotional, physical and financial distress.
